A fish kill in Audubon County will cost a local sewage-treatment plant 18-hundred dollars. Dan Stipe, the Department of Natural Resource’s field-office supervisor for southwest Iowa, says over the weekend engineers were working on a “trickling filter” and a malfunction let sewage flow into Bluegrass Creek, which caused a fish kill. Stipes says this is the second or third time in recent years the town of Audubon’s wastewater treatment plant has had the same kind of incident, and caused a fish kill.He says the DNR’s been working with the town and it’s starting construction on a new wastewater treatment plant. Stipes says the plant is beginning construction to remedy the spill problem, but it’s a particularly difficult time for both drinking water and wastewater plants in the region. He says there’s been kind of a drought for three years or so, and wells aren’t recharging with groundwater, forcing local governments to spend more money drilling new wells and treating the water. The fine paid by the town of Audubon will be 18-hundred dollars for the fish kill over the Labor Day weekend.
