On Labor Day, another big company announced it’s shutting down, idling thousands of big rigs and putting truck drivers, mechanics and terminal workers out of work in several Iowa locations. Consolidated Freightways has closed its doors, telling 15-thousand-500 workers not to show up today. The Vancouver, Washington-based trucking firm is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. It has terminals nationwide including in Clinton, Iowa, and in Rock Island, Illinois. Consolidated Freightways also has a terminal in Omaha, Nebraska/Council Bluffs, Iowa, where about one hundred workers are being laid off. It’s still unclear how many will lose their jobs in Clinton and in the Quad Cities.
