Movies like “The Mummy” or “Raiders of the Lost Ark” glorify the lives of archaeologists, but Iowans can get a sample of that profession over the next several weeks as part of Iowa Archaeology Month. Lynn Alex, coordinator at the Office of the State Architect, explains the goal is to let people know Iowa has wonderful historic archeological resources that need to be preserved. The focus of this month’s events are on ancient containers that have been found in Iowa, including woven basketry, ceramics, skin bags, wooden boxes, glass bottles and metal buckets. Alex, who is based in Iowa City, says there are lectures and workshops in various locations statewide through September.Alex says some of the events are tailored for adults, others are for children. The kids’ courses include: time capsules from the past, sandbox digs and pottery making. Many of the events are free. For more information, call (319) 384-0561 or surf to “www.uiowa.edu/~osa/” for the Office of the State Architect.
