Flag-waving sendoff ceremonies will be held in five Iowa cities this morning as 350 members of an Iowa National Guard unit go on active duty. The farewells are slated for 7:30 A-M at the Guard armories in Fort Dodge, Storm Lake, Spencer, Algona and Estherville. Guard spokesman Colonel Robert King says the 1st Battalion, 194th Field Artillery Unit is based in Fort Dodge and has four detachments. King explains those hundreds of Iowans are being ordered to federal active duty. They’ll first go to Camp Dodge, then to Fort Knox, Kentucky, for additional training. Then, they’ll go to three states to provide security at critical military installations for the next year. Colonel King says it’s sad to see the 350 men and women be put on active duty and leave, but that’s their job.The Battalion plans to conduct a formation at Camp Dodge on Sunday at 7:30 A-M before the massive military convoy heads out.
