After successfully pressing Iowa lawmakers to enact new restrictions on livestock confinements this past spring, the Iowa Environmental Council holds its annual meeting tomorrow to focus on water quality issues. The Council’s Tommi Makila organized the event.Makila says water quality has been the Iowa Environmental Council’s main focus, and the group wants to take stock and chart new goals.Makila says this year is an ideal year for such a discussion, as 2002 marks the 30th anniversary of the federal Clean Water Act and the five year anniversary of creation of the state’s water quality action plan. Makila says the environmental movement is healthy. The Iowa Environmental Council is a coalition of environmental groups and has had success at the statehouse by focusing on a single issue, such as capping ag drainage wells, and working with other groups to find common ground.
