Des Moines area builders, realtors and volunteers are remembering by rebuilding. Police, firefighters, carpenters, and realtors gathered to celebrate a year of “remembering by rebuilding” as they welcomed two families to houses that are being re-built for them in Des Moines. Sandra Bury of Des Moines took Rajab Subahi and his family under her wing. The family she helps has now been in Iowa for three years, and Bury says she loves them “a lot.” Part of getting them settled is finding good low-cost housing, and Bury says that was a real challenge. She says some housing isn’t very good, and so she asked a friend involved with habitat for Humanity if there was any reason the Des Moines program hasn’t yet helped any immigrant family. There isn’t, so here they are. Bury says the families are thrilled to get keys to the two homes, which aren’t done yet — but they hope to be living in them by Christmas.
