Farming is considered one of America’s most dangerous professions. As part of National Farm Safety and Health Week, an education campaign is being launched. Marilyn Adams, president and founder of Farm Safety 4 Just Kids, says one in every five farm-related injuries is to a child.Adams, of the Madison County town of Earlham, founded the group in 1987, a year after the death of her 11-year-old son, Keith, in a farm accident. An average of 104 children die in farm accidents nationwide every year — two a week. She’ll be in Washington D-C on Wednesday to join 104 kids in a walk through the nation’s capitol. The chapters of the organization will hold walks too with 104 kids.Adams says a national study finds young people who work in agriculture are three times more likely to suffer a fatal injury than those in the general private sector. She says it’s the only occupation where there are kids involved. She says it’s the place where kids, live, play and work, so that’s why it’s such a problem on the farm. The walks on Wednesday are being dubbed “104! No More” walks.
