Dry weather in southwest Iowa has hurt some crops — but apparently not apples. Russ Small owns the century-old Small’s Apple Farm near Mondamin in Harrison County. He says the apples are bigger than he expected — not as big as last year — but still not bad. He says the impact of the drought depends on the apple variety. He says the red and golden delicious apples have “real nice” size, while the overall size of the apples is not as big. Small wasn’t sure earlier this year if the apple trees would produce.Small says they’ve had real dry weather all summer, which hurt the vegetables, and left him wondering if the apples would grow. Small says an old favorite remains the top pick as the Jonathan has been the favorite the past 100 years and remains the top choice. Small says the warm dry weather so far this fall has been good for business at the pick-your-own farm.
