An elderly Van Buren County woman was killed in a single-car accident near Batavia over the weekend.About 9 Saturday morning, a vehicle being driven by 78-year-old Doris J. Hughes of Douds reportedly did not stop at a rural intersection, and wound-up going into a ditch. Accident reports say that Hughes’ vehicle then flipped onto its top and continued moving before finally coming to rest a short time later. She was transported to Jefferson County Hospital where she was declared dead. The accident is still under investigation, but heavy fog present at the intersection reduced visibilities to a few hundred feet. An autopsy will determine the official cause of Hughes’ death.
