While some states had no schools on the list, all three of Iowa’s public universities are ranked among the “Top 100 Values in Public Colleges,” according to Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine. Editor Brian Knestout says the survey is based on a simple creed. He says we try to balance the quality of instruction and the quality of the student body and the cost you end up paying for it. The University of Iowa ranks 35th in the U-S on the Kiplinger survey, Iowa State University is 51st and the University of Northern Iowa is 95th. Knestout says the rankings are based on a variety of factors.Criteria include: entrance exam scores, graduation rates, numbers of sophomores who return after their freshman year, student-faculty ratios, amount of money spent on student instruction, quality and cost measures and total cost overall. Knestout says the U-of-I ranked very high on the national list, in part, because it attracts such good students. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ranked first on the list.
