A group of cyclists will set out today on a tour of “green” projects that use renewable energy. Tour leader David Osterberg went on a similar trek through Europe this summer. Their first stop today is in Nevada at the BECON energy research center. He says it’s similar to a place in Holland. The group will then travel to two wind energy sites. They’ll stop at Forest City’s high school and the “Top of Iowa” wind farm near Joice. On Saturday, they’ll visit Waverly Power & Light. Osterberg says they’ll visit Alliant Energy’s downtown Cedar Rapids power plant Sunday morning. The coal-fired plant heats the downtown in addition to producing electricity. The final stop will be the University of Iowa’s power plant.Osterberg says the goal of the trip is to highlight projects in Iowa that’re wisely using energy resources or developing new ones.
