An Iowan is heading to Louisiana as a Red Cross volunteer to help hurricane victims. John Shafer of Clinton is this morning (Saturday) and should be there by noon. He’ll be doing family service work to help families find food, clothing and shelter. Shafer says many people fled Hurricane Lili.He says it could’ve been worse, but there are lots of people without electricity and that fled their homes due to flooding. Getting to Louisiana is the easy part. He says finding a place to stay once he gets there is tough, and usually volunteers have to stay 20 miles or so away.Shafer donates his time to give something to others. He says he’s always helped people as a volunteer firefighter and other things and now he’s retired and has the chance to help people. Shafer expects to be in Louisiana for three weeks.
