A Red Cross volunteer from eastern Iowa has found herself in the middle of a Louisiana bayou where residents are clamoring for help. Nadine Hollis of Marion spent nine weeks in New York City after the nine-eleven attacks, a much different assignment from her current task in Houma, Louisiana, following last week’s strike by Hurricane Lili. Hollis says 300 people are lined up at her Red Cross van every morning at 7:30 and “it doesn’t end until seven at night.” She describes what she’s doing.While it means working long hours in foul conditions, Hollis says it’s rewarding work.Hollis says a tornado struck nearby Wednesday, damaging as many as one-hundred more homes, in a region already facing a challenge to recover from the strong storm.
