Republican gubernatorial candidate Doug Gross would not move to repeal the law establishing English as the state’s officials language. Gross’s running mate, Debi Durham, says the “English Only” law has sent a bad message to businesses, as the perception is that legal immigrants aren’t welcome in Iowa. Gross campaign spokesman Eric Woolson says Durham wouldn’t be the one recommending legislative changes in a Gross administration. Woolson says it’d be Gross, as Governor, who would set the legislative agenda and he would not seek a change in the “English Only” law. Woolson says Gross would strive to create a “welcoming climate” for immigrants, and believes reading and speaking English is best for new citizens. Woolson says one way you succeed in a new culture is to learn its language.
