A Des Moines boy is in serious condition after being mauled by his family’s pet raccoon. The two-month old boy had his nose and lips chewed off by the raccoon Wednesday as his teenage mother slept nearby. The infant’s aunt heard his screams and rescued the child, Elijah Evans. He’s had reconstructive surgery but will need more operations. The raccoon, named Spook, was put to death and will be tested for rabies and other diseases. Police say the infant’s grandfather, Robert Evans, faces misdemeanor charges for keeping the illegal animal, which could bring fines and jail time. Juvenile authorities have taken custody of the boy away from the mother, 18-year-old Sharneilicole Evans. She’s also lost custody of a 13-month-old child. Two other children will remain in the house under the grandfather’s care.
