Winter’s made its mark on Iowa. While some areas got snow, and many more shivered in a cold rain, it was the overnight low that got the furnace running. Temps remained mildest, just below forty, around Fairfield and Iowa City overnight. But the lows dipped to 23 at Audubon in west-central Iowa, 22 at Fayette in the northeast, and 21 at Chariton. The national weather service has quit issuing freeze warnings, noting every part of the state has now had below-freezing spells and harvest season’s over. Best of all, the onset of late-autumn weather means the end of all the mosquitoes that could carry the West Nile virus, at least until next spring.
