Runners from across the Midwest are lacing their shoes in Des Moines this morning for Iowa’s largest running event and to help in the fight against breast cancer. The “Race for the Cure” drew 12-thousand runners last year and organizer Molly Veenstra says they’ve set the goal even higher this year. They’re hoping for 14-thousand runners today who have a goal of raising 300-thousand dollars, 75-percent of which will stay in central Iowa to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Veenstra says the money goes toward mammograms for the uninsured and underinsured in Iowa as well as for education and outreach programs. She says there are several runs within the run. Among the crowd will be hundreds of breast cancer survivors, women –and men– who face a daily personal race. Many participants will walk/run to celebrate breast cancer survivors and to pay tribute to those who have died from it. For more information, surf to “www.komen.org/desmoines”.
