Transportation officials in Iowa and Wisconsin are reviewing options that’ll decide whether the “Black Hawk Bridge” over the Mississippi at Lansing gets renovated or replaced. Rod Larsen of the Iowa D-O-T says the steel truss bridge is over 16-hundred-feet long, and quite unique. The bridge was built privately in 1931 and the owners charged a toll. The two states bought the bridge a few years later. Larsen says the bridge is an important crossing-point. The closest river bridge is 30 miles away, and Larsen says the bridge has a “profound impact” on the skyline of Lansing. Over the next two weeks, D-O-T officials will visit with those who own land near the bridge. A local steering committee is being consulted. The group held its first meeting October 21st. A recommendation is probably two years away.
