Forty games highlight tonight’s opening round of the high school football playoffs. In class 1A, Dike-New Hartford plays second rated Turkey Valley in the UNI-Dome. Dike-New Hartford coach Tom Wilson.says both teams feature outstanding speed. In class 3A, top ranked Clear Lake opens at home against upset-minded Crestwood and Cadets coach Chris Lentz says his team does not mind the underdog role. He says they went to Western Dubuque in the same situation, and played good hard-nosed football and won. Lentz says there are no secrets in tonight’s game plans, as both teams like to run the ball. In class 2A, top-ranked Central Lyon/George-Little Rock hosts Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley in a rematch of a game played just 12 days ago. The Lions won that contest 14-0, a game that the Lions turned in their favor by making big plays. Central Lyon coach Toby Lorenzen anticipates a similar contest tonight.Even though his team lost in the regular season contest, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley coach Cory Brandt does not expect to change his game plan much. Brandt says the Nighthawks just need to execute better. Also in 2A, eighth-ranked North Fayette is at home against Maquoketa Valley. North Fayette wrapped up a district title with a win over Jesup in the regular season finale and coach Ron Wymer feels his team is playing its best at the right time and that’s been their goal, to get better each week.Wymer says the Hawks defense will be tested as he says Maquoketa has three good recievers and they throw the ball well. All of tonight’s winners advance to next week’s quarterfinal round.
