An Iowa performer is returning to his home state today as one of the many feisty felines in the stage show “Cats.” Brian Collier is a Council Bluffs native who’s been touring with this show for a year-and-a-half under the title of dance captain. He’s in charge of making sure all of the choreography, staging and everything is looking like it’s supposed to, and he’s also the fill-in actor for eight different cats, should someone get injured or sick. The 24-year-old Collier says he often watches the show from the audience, even though he’s seen it many hundreds of times. He likes to make sure things are going smoothly and he teaches people who come into roles. “Cats” is still playing in London and has been showing there for 21 years. The fantasy/musical was in New York City for 18 years before closing in the year 2000 as the longest-running musical on Broadway. Collier says his life is exciting, hectic and rewarding. He’s contracted to be on the tour at least six more months and after that — he has dreams of making it to Broadway. The show opens at the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines tonight at 7:30 and runs through December 1st. Collier says it’s slated to be in Cedar Falls early next spring.
