The Iowa Crop Improvement Association is out with its annual seed directory. The directory helps growers select everything from oats to wheat. Spokesperson Eileen Wuebker says one of the changes in recents years is the number of growers who’re producing seed for native Iowa grasses. There are about a dozen growers in the state producing over 100 species of seed on roughly three-thousand acres. She says for native prairie species, ICIA provides assurance that the seed’s collection source is certified. Wuebker says this is important because many native prairie plants and seeds on the market do not guarantee place of origin. One thing that hasn’t changed, the directory still features the Iowa staples of corn and beans. She says the varieties have changed over the years, but the companies producing the seed have stay farily consistent. Wuebker says the directory is a source for anyone interested in seeds. The seed directories are free and available by contacting the association at (515) 294-6921. The directory also can be found on the ICIA website at http://www.agron.iastate.edu/icia/.
