A woman who consults with hiring managers in Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota and the Dakotas says companies are hiring, but are more likely to hire consultants or make new hires on a temp or probationary basis. Irene Gardner, a regional manager for Robert Half Finance and Accounting, says businesses want to make sure they’re making the right hire, and want to observe the person on the job before the probationary employee goes full-time.Gardner says it’s a way companies ease back into hiring mode after a downturn. She says there are a couple of areas where there’s job growth.Gardner says companies are looking for people with an auditing background. She suggests internal auditors and cost accountants get involved in accounting associations as a way to network and find openings. In addition to folks with auditing experience, Gardner’s firm says people with advanced computer skills and even receptionists are in demand in the manufacturing, construction and energy sectors of Iowa’s economy.
