What started as a simple 4-H project for a northwest Iowa high schooler has snowballed into a regional relief effort. 17-year-old Cindy Jones wanted to gather some dry goods to package up and send to U-S troops stationed in troublespots abroad. As word spread, the Spencer High School junior says donations began coming in from people all over northwest Iowa. Items include: cocoa, jello, Kool-Aid, books, card games, small board games and hygiene items.Jones and other Clay County 4-H Club members are preparing to send the massive shipment to Red Cross stations in Kuwait, Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia. She says the goods should make a brighter holiday season for several -thousand- American soldiers. Jones says she’s ecstatic to see the project balloon in popularity from her initial goals.Jones has dubbed the effort “Operation Enduring Peace” and has been working with several offices of the Iowa State University Extension, which have been serving as drop-off spots.
