State officials say one person was killed and at least four were badly hurt over the weekend as the shotgun season on deer hunting opened Saturday. Rod Slings is the safety supervisor for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says a hunter in Mahaska County shot a coyote, the slug passed through the animal and hit another hunter in the head who was down the hill in a brushy area. The dead hunter is identified as: 44-year-old Rodney Schippers of Bussey. Slings says there were several other hunters shot over the weekend.In addition to injury incidents in Cherokee and Monona counties, other hunters were hurt in accidents in Washington and Iowa counties. Last year, one person was killed on opening weekend and two were hurt. Overall, there were two fatal and seven non-fatal deer hunting-related incidents in 2001. He saysabout 70-thousand hunters were in Iowa’s fields and forests over the weekend.
