The interim leader of the University of Iowa says as the cost of higher education escalates, fewer people will choose to obtain advanced degrees. University of Iowa interim president Willard “Sandy” Boyd says med school admissions aren’t increasing in Iowa City, and are on the decline nationwide as potential students are wary of racking up that much debt. Boyd says he’s worried by the recent tuition increases for all students at the Regents institutions.Boyd says not only do students have to work their way through school, they’re got to borrow, too. He says he grew up in an environment where access is key to the institution.Boyd, who is 75, was president of the University of Iowa from 1969 to ’81. He left to become the director of Chicago’s Field Museum. He later returned to the university to teach and was recently named interim president. Boyd made his comments on Iowa Public Television.
