What’s reportedly the largest charity fund drive in Iowa history has ended in success. The United Way of Central Iowa, which serves nearly 170 agencies and programs in the region, has concluded its annual fundraising campaign. Chapter vice president Chris Coleman says it netted more than 16-million dollars. The goal was 16-million. Last year, the chapter raised 14-point-7-million. Coleman says this year’s campaign produced a record amount and a record increase in any one year. He says 67 different agencies participate in the program.Coleman says his chapter has worked hard to overcome the drops in giving many charities have seen since the economic downturn and the 9-11 terrorist attacks. He says United Way chapters across the state serve as a national example as he says they’ll likely raise over 50-million dollars. Coleman says more than 50-thousand people contributed to this year’s campaign. The United Way of Central Iowa helps support all sorts of groups, like: the Y-M-C-A and Y-W-C-A, the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts and Campfire Girls.
