Governor Tom Vilsack is finding it difficult to find people willing to head state agencies like the Department of Economic Development and the Department of Revenue and Finance. Vilsack fired six state agency directors the day before Thanksgiving in a move he said was designed to start his next four-year administration “with a clean slate.” Vilsack says the pay is an issue, because people can make four times as much at similar jobs in the private sector. Vilsack says he’ll ask legislators for some flexibility on compensation packages to respond to concerns of those who’re being pursued for the positions.Vilsack says he’s conducting a national search for most of the department directors he’ll looking for.Vilsack says it’ll take a while to find the right person for the jobs, especially the job of director of the Department of Human Services, a job that’s been a lightning rod for controversies.
