Governor Tom Vilsack has been meeting with business and community leaders throughout the state since he was re-elected, talking about ideas for growing the state.Vilsack has been asking those opinion leaders to pressure lawmakers to “think boldly” about changes that need to take place. While Vilsack’s not ready to reveal the details of his own ideas, he says changes will be easier to make because he and lawmakers acted quickly when state budget problems first developed.Vilsack says as challenging as the budget problem may be in Iowa, they’re much worse in surrounding states. Vilsack says that gives Iowa an opportunity to take some bold steps and market the state, Iowa could have an economic recovery that’s stronger here than in other places where they’re grappling with state budget deficits. California’s Governor announced this week that his state’s deficit was 35-BILLION dollars.
