Cedar Rapids police got their Christmas gift a little early last night — in the form of a suspect who turned himself in. A Cedar Rapids woman was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver on Saturday as she got out of her car on a residential street. The victim was 53-year-old Darlene Slaymaker. Investigators have spent the last several days trying to coax someone to come forward who knew about the incident or for the driver to do the right thing and confess. That happened last night. Police say 21-year-old Nicholas Harris of Cedar Rapids turned himself in and admitted he was behind the wheel. Harris is charged with failure to maintain control and causing death. He also turned in the car he was driving and was taken to the Linn County Jail.
