(Miami)-College bowl games are not just for football, they’re also a chance for university officials to meet and greet alumni and showcase their schools. Interim University of Iowa President Willard “Sandy” Boyd is doing just that. Boyd says he’s excited by the greeting he’s gotten in south Florida. “Everybody in Miami is stunned that the tickets sold out for the first time in the first day,” Boyd says. Today’s Orange Bowl is a great way to sell the U-of-I’s football program, the university and the state according to Boyd. Some academics say don’t think athletics belong in a college setting, but not Boyd. He says being part of the Big Ten has been of enormous importance academically as well as athletically. Boyd admits to being one of those who originally favored Iowa going to the Rose Bowl, but now he says “the Orange Bowl is terrific.” Up to 50-thousand Iowa alumni and fans are in Miami for the game.
