Governor Tom Vilsack, a democrat, says President Bush’s economic stimulus package might be good for the long-term. But Vilsack says a quick jump-start’s needed, in the form of a tax refund. Vilsack says a refund’s the quickest way to stimulate the economy because when people have more money in their pockets, they spend it. President Bush is proposing a series of tax cuts and breaks, most geared to stimulate business investment.Vilsack says he applauds the President’s effort, but Vilsack says experience shows the best way to stimulate the economy is to provide “working families” with resources that they’ll go out and spend. Vilsack’s calling on the Bush Administration to dump the idea of scaling back federal spending on road construction projects, too. Vilsack says road construction creates good-paying jobs and is another way to light a fire under the tepid economy.
