The case of the clumsy campus custodian is closed. Authorities say a batch of things vanished from the Iowa State University Book Store and the Memorial Union over Christmas break, including thousands of dollars in computers, software, P-D-As, and office furniture. I-S-U Police Captain Gene Deisinger says the book store employees were key to speeding the investigation along. The book store staff found some of the more unique items for sale on the Internet website e-Bay along with the seller’s name. An I-S-U janitor, 44-year-old Kevin James Carroll of Ames, is charged with seven counts of theft and one count of burglary. He’s jailed in Story County. Captain Deisinger says while the arrest was swift, the suspect wasn’t. “We’re certainly thankful he made it as easy as what he did for members of the Iowa State University Book Store staff to find him and for us to confirm his identity.” Deisinger says a host of things were found in Carroll’s residence that’d been stolen from I-S-U, from desk chairs to glass vases taken after a wedding.Deisinger says some of the items had been stolen from I-S-U as far back as the summer of 2000.
