A hunter from the Harlan area is recovering after a near-deadly mishap. A 23-year-old western Iowa man suffered serious leg injuries in a hunting accident this weekend. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says Dennis Gross was struck in his lower-right leg after his 12-gauge shotgun accidentally went off as he was getting out of his pickup on Saturday. Gross was flown by helicopter to an Omaha hospital, where he’s listed in “fair” condition. The accident happened near Gross’s hometown of Earling, in northwest Shelby County. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the state D-N-R are investigating.
