While one democratic presidential candidate calls war with Iraq “unjust” another says it is just if it keeps Saddam Hussein from gaining the ability to nuke his neighbors and foes. North Carolina Senator John Edwards spoke at a Des Moines nursing home over the noon-hour.Edwards says Hussein has started two wars, and the only reason he’s still in power is because he promised the world he’d disarm. Edwards says Hussein’s been playing games for over a decade, and he should not be allowed to gain “nuclear capability.” He says if Hussein voluntarily disarms, then we should accept victory and do not need to go to war. Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean delivered a foreign policy address at Drake University this afternoon, saying “it’s the wrong war at the wrong time.” Edwards says Dean is entitled to his opinion, but Edwards says he holds a different view. He says this is what he believes is the right thing to do. Edwards says if he was trying to make democrats happy, he knows what to say, but says he’s doing what he believes is the right thing for the country.Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman, another candidate who’s in Iowa campaigning today, says Saddam Hussein is a “ticking time bomb” who must be dealt with. Lieberman, Edwards, Dean and Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich will appear at the Iowa Federation of Labor convention later this afternoon.
