The Minnesota resident who killed an Iowa college student in a hit and run accident wassentenced today to one year in prison. The incident happened last June in the Twin Cities, but Guido Vivar Rivera wasn’t arrested until weeks later when his wife Christina saw a flyer about the accident and called police. She said,”I felt it was the right thing to do because I know if that was my son, I would have wanted to know what happened to him.” The 26-year-old Rivera was driving home from work last June when he hit and killed 21-year-old Dan Peterson, an Iowa State University student who had returned home to Excelsior, Minnesota, for the summer. Christina Vivar said when her husband came home with car damage last June, he told her it was from a rock hitting the windshield. Weeks later she saw a flyer about a deadly accident near her home: Christine Vivar said “I got really panicky and so I went home and I called my insurance and asked my insurance when I had called on the windshield and they had said it was on the same date that accident happened.” She called police, who later arrested her husband for the hit and run that killed Peterson. Vivar got a ten-thousand dollar reward for the call.
