Postal Service says it can’t make it through all storms

Officials with the U-S Postal Service are pleased with the performance of Iowa letter carriers during the weekend’s very foul winter weather. Despite one of the worst snowstorms in years, most carriers managed to do their duty, even with 14-inches of newfallen flakes. Des Moines postmaster Tom Goodrich says about 98-percent of deliveries were made statewide on Saturday, but it fell to about 75-percent in Des Moines, where the snow was the deepest. He says many businesses were closed Saturday, and that made up many of the places that didn’t get mail.Goodrich says this day after President’s Day is another challenge, especially after the stormy weekend. On a normal day after a Monday holiday, he says mail volume is usually doubled but since some deliveries weren’t made Saturday, volume today may be three times higher than normal. Goodrich says carriers are dedicated to upholding that motto of “neither rain nor sleet nor snow…” He says they do their best, but sometimes it’s impossible to deliver mail if the streets are too full of snow. Goodrich says Iowans mailing things to –or expecting mail from– anywhere in the northeastern U-S should add a day to the wait, because that region of the country got even more snow than Iowa.
