Gas prices are galloping in Iowa and the prices were paying now are the highest since just after the nine-eleven attacks. The D-N-R’s energy data analyst Jennifer Moehlmann runs down the results of the monthly survey. The survey of gasoline prices from the D-N-R finds the statewide average at a dollar-61 a gallon. That’s up 22 cents from January and 51 cents higher than a year ago. Moehlmann blames the sharp price hikes on low supplies and worries over the outbreak of war with Iraq. If war -does- break out, Moehlmann expects gas prices may go up, but not much higher. She says prices may rise as much as 15 more cents a gallon if there’s a war, but she says that high a rise would be something of a surprise. She says a large war premium is already built into the price and once the uncertainty is over, prices should fall. The current dollar-61 average is the highest since the statewide average hit a dollar-63 in September of 2001.
