A traveler who caused a homeland security alert at the airport in Waterloo may spend more time in Iowa than he anticipated. Even a year and a half ago, you didn’t joke about airport security if you wanted a trouble-free trip. And Friday, a traveler with an Australian passport was in the Waterloo Municipal airport when both carry on and his checked suitcase set off the explosive-ingredients sensors in the new screening machinery there. They were doing a more intensive personal screening and asked him to take a metal clip off some currency when court papers say 38-year-old Scott Kennedy said “that will probably set the bloody bomb off.” He’s been jailed ever since, and Assistant U-S Attorney Kandi Wilcox said Thursday Kennedy was released ..to the custody of the INS. The “detained” in charge of his case will determine if he’s to be sent out of the country immediately or stay in jail here till his criminal case comes up.
