Those who’re opposed to war with Iraq say it could become another Vietnam for the U.S. Iowa Congressman Jim Leach says that comparison is hard to make. He says analogies are awfully difficult with all prior conflicts, but he says there are aspects that can be similar. Leach says the situation in Iraq is more manageable than Vietnam. Leach says there are some risks in Iraq that the U.S. hasn’t faced before, including the possibility that Iraq might use weapons of mass destruction. He says that alone makes it a more difficult situation than Vietnam ever was. He says the U.S. also risks alienating other Muslim countries with an attack on Iraq. Leach says linking Iraq to the failed U.S. effort in Vietnam is a stretch. He says there are analogies to Vietnam, but he says they’re fairly frail.Leach is a republican from Iowa City.
