The Iowa Senate Appropriations Committee has rejected a House-endorsed plan that would have forwarded three-and-a-half million dollars to counties to cover property tax credits the state failed to pay this past year. Senate Appropriations Committee chairman Jeff Lamberti of Ankeny says their alternative would pay for the elderly and disabled property tax credit, and fix a snafu with the machinery and equipment tax exemption. Lamberti says the cost of his committee’s plan is just 800-thousand dollars, which is more prudent given the budget constraints they face. But House Speaker Christopher Rants of Sioux City hopes his fellow Republican Senators change their minds. Rants says House Republicans promised voters in October that they’d restore the property tax credits, and they want to honor that commitment.
