Environmentalists “marched forth on March 4th” to call on legislators and the Governor to spend more on water quality initiatives. Iowa Environmental Council executive director Elizabeth Horton Plasket says there’s a need to change the state rules for judging which rivers and streams are considered polluted. Horton Plasket says it’s time to “tell the truth” about all of Iowa’s waterways and single out the polluted ones as “impaired” so the state can qualify for federal cleanup funds. According to the Iowa Environmental Council, the state has classified 188 bodies of water as “impaired” by pollution, but the group contends as many as 100 more should be on the list.
