The class 3A quarterfinals highlighted Tuesday’s action at the Girls’ State Basketball Tournament. Third-ranked Pella used a 9-0 run early in the second quarter to take command enroute to a 62-42 victory over sixth-ranked Crestwood. Pella coach Mike Vint says having played in the tournament before was a plus for his team. Pella guard Tara Sorenson led all scorers with 19-points on eight of 12 shooting but said 16 offensive rebounds were the biggest factor in the win. Pella attempted 37-shots in the opening half to just 15 for Crestwood. Crestwood coach Jim Obermann says they threw the ball away too much and are disappointed they didn’t give their best effort. Sixth-ranked Atlantic jumped out to a 20-7 lead at the end of one in a 59-34 victory over Webster City. Atlantic coach Don Jenkins feels their press allowed the tempo to be in their favor. He says it’s not necessarily getting a lot of steals, it’s wearing the other team down. After getting out to a big lead Atlantic was outscored 12-7 in the second quarter and Jenkins used the halftime break to get his team refocused. He says he let them know at he wasn’t happy, but he says that’s nothing new.
