An Iowa soybean and corn farmer was recently elected president of a coalition of alternative farm groups. George Naylor, who farms in Greene County near Churdan, says increasing the money farmers make is the top priority of the National Family Farm Coalition (NFFC).Naylor says they want to get a fair price for their products, which he says are too low, and getting a new farm bill is the number-one goal in getting better prices. He says the packer ownership issue is also a priority. Naylor says they don’t think big packers should own livestock, as he says as long as they own some of the livestock, the big packers will ensure that family farmers get nothing for their livestock. Naylor’s membership in the group Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement led to his election as president of the NFFC. He says these groups which tout the family farm are gaining support.Naylor says there’s a grassroots movement among consumers to buy their food locally and have it more natural. Naylor says the N-F-F-C is trying to give family farmers a voice. He says a lot of the groups that represent agriculture don’t represent family farms, they represent large operations. Dean’s been elected to a one year term.
