Congressional Republicans say they’re trying to come to the rescue of embattled doctors, but at least one Iowa Congressman won’t be joining in. The House is debating limits on jury awards in medical malpractice cases to halt the spiraling cost of doctors’ insurance. Democrat Leonard Boswell says Republicans are squashing any opposition to their legislation so he’ll vote “no” on the bill. The Republican-backed measure would limit non-economic damages for injuries like the loss of sight or limbs to 250-thousand dollars. Punitive damages, which punish a doctor for serious mistakes, would also be limited. They could be twice the amount of economic damages awarded or 250-thousand dollars — whichever is greater.
