Two champions will be crowned tonight at the Boys’ State Basketball tournament. Two tradition rich programs collide for the 1A title as top-ranked Newell-Fonda takes on Boyden-Hull, one will look to build on a string of title game successes, the other tries to snap a string of disappointments. Newell-Fonda brings a perfect 4-0 championship game record into this meeting, the Mustangs last title back in 2000 capped back-to-back crowns. Boyden-Hull is one of the state’s most successful programs, making a tenth trip to the tournament since 1987. One thing is missing from the trophy case, though, and is a championship trophy in four trips to the final. Newell-Fonda junior Matt Stauter says it’s everbody’s goal to make it to the title game, and only two teams can do it.In the class 2A championship Sioux Center will bid for its first title since 1967 against a Wapsie Valley team bidding for its first championship. The goal for Sioux Center coach Todd Arends is to slow down Wapsie Valley’s Brooks McKowen. It won’t be easy, as McKowen is the state’s all-time leading scorer.Arends says this tournament has shown that McKowen isn’t Wapsie’s only threat.
