A deal that’d end the conflict between the state and Iowa’s three race track casinos may be reached Monday. While negotiations appeared to hit a wall earlier this week, Senate Republican Leader Stewart Iverson of Dows says an end — and a resolution — may be near. Iverson says he feels pretty confident that lawmakers and the Governor will be able to work out a solution with the gaming industry. The state stands to lose million in taxes from the tracks because the Iowa Supreme Court has ruled the tracks should be taxed at a rate that’s higher than the riverboats pay. The state’s appealed the ruling, and the U-S Supreme Court is expected to rule on the case this summer. Iverson says Iverson says the danger is that the state could lose, and there’d be a 35 million dollar hole in the state budget plan. That would force legislators to reconvene in special session this summer to come up with a way to plug that hole. Earlier this week, both Governor Vilsack — a democrat — and Republican legislative leaders expressed anger about negotiations on the gambling impasse.
