The fifth time turned out to be the charm for Boyden-Hull. The Comets jumped out to a 25-3 first half lead then held off a furious second half rally by Newell-Fonda for a 49-35 victory and the school’s first 1A state championship after four previous losses in the championship game. Forward Keith Siestra who led the Comets with 16 points and eight rebounds says he remembered losing in double overtime as a freshman, and he and all the others wanted to go out and get it done. He says he can’t describe what it means to finally be the number one team. In the Class 2A championship, Sioux Center burst out to a 25-point halftime lead and went on to a 74-60 win over Wapsie Valley. North Scott tangles with Waterloo East in tonight’s 4A title game. Scottie Bradens’ 15-footer at the buzzer capped a huge rally by North Scott in a 68-66 victory over Marshalltown, a game the lancers trailed by 16 in the third quarter. Marshalltown threw the ball out of bounds with 12-seconds remaining giving North Scott the final chance, a call Marshalltown coach Jerry Nikkel felt should have gone the Bobcats’ way. He says they had the ball and everything they wanted until the call that turned the ball over. North Scott will play Waterloo East for the 4A crown. All-State guard Mike Henderson had 26-points on 12 of 15 shooting as the Trojans cruised past Des Moines Hoover 60-44. He said he had a bad night the night before and decided to step it up.Henderson says after a runner-up finish a year ago, the Trojans want to take the next step. He says all the work in the off season has been in preparing for the championship.
