Iowans have donated several tons of food and other items to the Red Cross for U.S. troops in Iraq. Bobbi Bishop, spokeswoman for the American Red Cross Chapter in Central Iowa, says her Des Moines-based unit alone has collected at least 15 tons of prepackaged stuff like candy, microwave popcorn and toiletry items. Bishop says volunteers are now boxing up the goods.No box can weigh more than 45 pounds, and each must be labeled to indicate its contents.Bishop says the boxes will be shipped to another Red Cross chapter overseas. From there, the goods will be distributed by the military. She says the heightened security measures require the special shipping instrutions.Bishop says it may take days to box up all the supplies.There are about 20 Red Cross Chapters in Iowa.
