The central Iowa town of Newton will become the home of a 30-million dollar race track. The lone city councilman who opposed the development agreement between the city and U.S. Motorsports entertainment has changed his vote, giving developers the unanimous council support they wanted. Developer Paul Schlaak is pleased to see the full council’s backing so plans for the track can move forward. Construction on the 25-thousand seat, seven-eighths mile paved track will begin soon. It will create 25 fulltime jobs and 125 parttime jobs on race weekends. Racing should start next year. The track will be built just off Interstate 80 on Newton’s southeast side, about 25 miles east of Des Moines.
