A man who served 25 years behind bars for a murder in Council Bluffs was released yesterday. In February, the Iowa Supreme Court overturned Terry Harrington’s conviction, but a technicality kept him behind bars while the legal folks debated the details. Yesterday, the Iowa Parole Board voted to offer Harrinigton a reprieve, and the Governor granted it. Parole board member Richard Bordwell of Washington says it may be a first. Bordwell says no one at the Parole Board ever remembers another reprieve, which lets Harrington out but leaves open the possibility he could be retried. He says the county attorney and the police may go forward with another trial. The Governor’s other options were a pardon or to commute the sentence to time served. Harrington has always maintained he was not guilty of the 1978 shooting death of an off-duty police officer, and a friend working on his behalf found hidden documents which suggested there was another viable suspect, information that led to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Harrington’s conviction. Bordwell was released from the state prison in Clarinda yesterday.
